Dec 2011 ARES/RACES Report
November was a somewhat busy month. We had four Emcomm nets, one Emcomm Coffee, and one public service exercise. This month we stated back with the traffic handling practice. This is a lot of fun and hones our skills passing formal traffic using the ARRL Traffic Forms. WA6FFJ sent a message during the net and we all copied it as well as we could. The message was posted on the ARES website so we could see what the original text was and check our accuracy. This practice will continue each week and should give us more confidence when we pass traffic during a disaster or helping one of our served agencies.
We met with some representative from Kaiser Hospital regarding the effectiveness of the Kaiser Amateur Radio Network. This net connects the hospitals in the northern part of California together during an emergency. Details were covered about the Kaiser owned equipment at the hospital and their 440 MHz repeater. We also discussed the change of their personnel that were in charge of the equipment and our availability to the areas that the equipment is installed. Kaiser is extremely interested in the RACES/ARES Group helping them with their Amateur Radio program.
We participated in the Salvation Army "Arizona Statewide and Western Territory Disaster Training Exercise" held November 3rd. We activated the SATERN EOC and checked into the emergency net that was located in Tucson AZ. No traffic was sent to our area but we were there if needed. The drill lasted about three hours and then the net was closed down.
The Two Cities Marathon was held on November the sixth. Nineteen hams took part helping with the communications for the medical people. We set up at six med stops, the start and finish lines and the extended portion of the marathon. We were also set up at the command post. All and all things went rather well, as with all events nothing is flawless. We will be critiquing the event at out next meeting. I would like to thank all that took part and a job well done.
Remember December 21 is the Salvation Army Toy and Food Distribution. We will be helping with traffic control for this function again this year.
Don't forget the Monday Night Emcomm Net at 1930 hr. on the 147.15 MHz pl 141.3 we have some good information and camaraderie on the net. On the third Friday of the month there is an Emcomm Breakfast at Yosemite Falls Cafe just north of Shaw on Blackstone at 0830hr. Last but not least is the Emcomm Meeting which will combine the November and December meetings and will be held on December 1, at 1900 hr at the Salvation Army Citadel at 1854 Fulton St Fresno.
